He who reads will one day wish to write. It is in this spirit that the National Library of Nigeria in her bid to encourage and cultivate reading culture in students organizes readership promotion campaign in all her functional branches throughout the federation. The objectives of the campaign are "to encourage reading among Nigerians, particularly the young ones, promoting reading materials and to identify obstacles which inhibit reading and ways of of eliminating them".
The theme of the programme is "working together to build a virile reading nation: challenges and strategies". The programme which is will hold in all 23 functional branches started on 1st June, 2017 with three branches-Bauchi, Edo & Katsina. Yesterday, 14th June, 2017 Abia and Oyo states held their readership promotion campaign activities.
Dignitaries that graced the event at Ibadan branch of National Library are the National Librarian/CEO of National Library of Nigeria, Prof. Lenrie Aina; Director PSD (South), National Library, Abuja, Mrs. R. A Shehu; commissioner for education, who was ably represented by the Director, education curriculum; chairmen Association of Independent Publishers & Association of Nigerian Authors; Mr. Olorusaye, immediate past chairman, Nigerian Library Association, Oyo state; Heads of branches of National Library of Nigrria, Lagos, Ondo and Ogun. Others include renowned academicians like Prof. Iyabo Mabawonku, Prof. Okwilagwe, commandant NSCDC, the state coordinator, Red cross society, Oyo state, Dr. Bayo Busari, Dr. Chris Omoregie and Prof. Egunyomi, HOD, Adult Education, University of Ibadan, Ibadan.
The guest lecturer, Dr. Chris Omoregie of the University of Ibadan gave three recommendations on how to help people develop interest in reading- "Create an interaction with somebody that cannot read and write; read syatematically; form reading and writing clubs, because reading is a corollary of writing". The National Librarian in his address also called on all stakeholders- parents, teachers, authors, publishers, booksellers, librarians, and government officials- to work together, so that we can build a virile reading nation, because a reading nation is a developed nation.
