Tributes to Dele Giwa

                                                                         Dele Giwa  (1947-1986)

On the 19th of October, 1986 one of Nigeria's finest journalist departs the earthly to the eternal existence. October 19, 2013 marks the 27th year anniversary of his death.
Sunmonu Oladele Giwa was born on 16th March, 1947. He attended the Local Authority Modern School in Lagere, Ile-Ife, for his elementary education and proceeded to Brooklyn college, in the United Kingdom where he badgeda B.A in English in 1947.
He was the first Editor-in Chief of Newswatch, a weekly news magazine which he formed in 1984 alongside other Nigerian journalists, Ray Ekpu and Yakub Muhammad.
A 1989 description of the magazine said it "changed the format of print journalism in Nigeria (and) introduced bold, investigative formats to news reporting in Nigeria".
Dele Giwa was a brilliant journalist with effervescent style of writing". He was described by an accomplished journalist, Dele Momodu as "a pen-god who was worshiped at the altar of investigative journalism.
"Giwa ws killed by a Mail Bomb in his home on October 19, 1986".
According to Wikipedia "when Giwa received the package, he was with Kayode Soyinka, the Bureau Chief of Newswatch. The package exploded, mortally wounded Giwa and temporarily deafening  Soyinka, who had excused himself to to the restroom before Giwa was supposed to have attempted opening the package. Giwa was rushed to the hospital where he eventually died".
Giwa! the indelible marks you left in the world of journalism are still fresh in our memory.
