At the last World Environmental Day in Mongolia, a report was
released which says that one out of every four calories produced by the global
agricultural system is being lost or wasted thereby posing serious challenge to
the increasing global population.
It was in an effort to find a lasting solution to this, that
a Nigerian teacher from a family of pot makers, Muhammad Bah Abba developed a technology called Zeer evaporation cooler system.
This technology received accolades at the World
Environmental Day as one of the technology that can check food waste globally.
It is a small scale pot-in-pot system which uses two pots of
slightly different size. The smaller pot is placed inside the lager pot and the
gap between the pot is filled with sand. A Zeer which costs $2 (N310. 00k) can
hold up to 12kg of produce and preserve foods, vegetables and fruits without
refrigeration for about 20 days.
